A conversation with everyday Stockmen,

Featuring Nate and Jayna Frederickson, Frederickson Ranch of Spearfish, S.D.

About the Stockman.

"We are a fifth-generation ranch, starting in Minnesota and moving to South Dakota in 2002. Frederickson Ranch’s primary focus is in seedstock production. We market 175 to 200 Angus and Hereford bulls annually. We host an annual production sale at the ranch, west of Spearfish, the first Saturday in December. Along with selling bulls we also market 150 to 200 young commercial cows per year. On the side, we also sell fresh, high-quality beef."

What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most?

"Working with my fellow cattlemen and being blessed to run cattle in one of the most beautiful places in this great country."

What is your least favorite job on the farm?

"Night calving."

What is the most used tool on your farm? How old is it?

"Silencer Chute and Daniels Alley. They are approximately 5 years old."

What is your go-to sorting apparatus?

"Flag."

Describe your worst day.

"There are very few worst days when you get to do what you love. Maybe a most embarrassing day. I headed to the vet clinic with an OB cow. I backed up to the loading chute and to my surprise, I had no cow. I had forgot to latch the sliding door and it jiggled open. I found her grazing in the road ditch two miles from town."

Your favorite non-farm activity to do in your free time?

"Archery hunting elk."

The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business?

"Be willing to take careful and calculated risks and seize opportunity when it presents itself. Most of all, be humble."

Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you?

"Hereford cow FHF 409 Rita 21W. She produced several breed impacting herd sires and helped propel our Hereford business."
